This nitric oxide is responsible for the all important dilation and increased flow of blood to the penis. Blood engorges the penis. The penis is basically made up of three hollow tubes – the big two are called the corpus cavernosa and the third lower tube which encircles the urethra is called the corpus spongiosum. These chambers fill up with the increased blood flow and the increased hydraulic pressure leads to an erection. Thus Viagra inhibits the enzyme PDE-5 and acts every quickly – in some men as quick as 15 minutes, to give a strong hard sustaining erection. Not only that Viagra lasts for a whopping 4 hours.
